A map of Europe each century, 1 to 2000.

Periodis Mobile, by Euratlas, is an application that displays the history of Europe through a sequence of 21 historical maps. Every map depicts the political situation, that is to say the countries with their administrative divisions and their dependencies, at fixed intervals as it was in the last year of each century, namely the centennial year, from AD 2000 to AD 1. Thus, one can see the map of Europe in the year 2000, then in the year 1900, 1800, 1700 and so on, until year 1.

Actually, Periodis is a historical atlas of a new kind. It does not highlight specific years by decreeing what are the prominent moments in history. Nor does it narrate events like a historical novel or a match commentary but it shows only how things turned out over time. The covered geographical surface is the European cultural area in a wide sense, that is from the mid-Sahara in the South to Helsinki in the North and from the Atlantic Ocean in the West to the Caspian Sea in the East. Indeed, Periodis covers the main lands where the history of the Western world developed.

Periodis Mobile will be useful to teachers who need to explain a political situation at a certain moment of history or to students who want to catch a quick view of the existing countries in Europe during the past centuries. Moreover, everyone, journalist, searcher, artist or traveler, who wants to learn something more about the evolution of our continent or who visits ancient places, can easily use it.

Navigation and display are easy: one simply needs to choose a year, only centennial years of course, in the upper right menu and then, to zoom in towards the desired area on the map. When zooming in, more details will appear, like rivers and cities. At the maximal zoom level, the mountain relief will be shown too on the maps. By clicking on a land, you will display a label box with the name of the sovereign country in bold letters and the name of the administrative division or area in light italic script. The upper left menu gives access to the map legend.

Periodis mobile can be used everywhere online if there is a wi-fi or a web data connection but there is also an option to use it offline. You simply need to select « Offline version » from the upper left menu to download the complete set of maps.

Periodis Mobile is a light version of Euratlas Periodis Expert, a program available for desktop computers that offers powerful editing and search function. For more details, see please:
